Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

The Review:

This is the Movie in a Minute review for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Directed by David Yates and starring Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Jim Broadbent, Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Tom Felton, Sir Michael Gambon, Helen McCrory, Alan Rickman, Dame Maggie Smith, David Thewlis, Mark Williams, Julie Walters and Bonnie Wright.

The sixth film in the franchise, the Half-Blood Prince once again takes us back to Hogwarts to follow the exploits of Harry, Ron and Hermione, with Dumbledore training Harry in the ways to destroy Lord Voldemort.

It would seem that a lot of the fans from the book series are very angry at Warner now. Adamantly, they did mess a lot of things up from the book. Even though there are a great many things I would have changed, it was still a delight to finally see this long awaited film. I would have liked to see Hagrid in more scenes, what was a very large and important role in the book was cut to three scenes of no more than ten minutes. I always want to see more of Snape, Rickman can take any role given to him and take it to places impossible to other actors. There was far too much kid drama, which was overplayed. I also don’t understand why they didn’t continue to use the castle from previous films and use computer graphics to create a new one. Radcliffe and Wright worked well together to begin the relationship that Harry and Ginny will have later on. I also felt that it was a bad move to give away who the note in the locket was in this film, it should have been left for later, I won’t say anything here in case all of you have not discovered it yet. For all the flaws, this is still a high point in the film series, a real treat for the eyes.

Public Enemies

The Review:

This is the Movie in a Minute review for Public Enemies. Directed by Michael Mann and starring Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Marion Cotillard, Channing Tatum, Giovanni Ribisi and Stephen Dorff.

Public Enemies follows John Dillinger, Homer Van Meter, Baby Face Nelson and others as they make their way from state to state robbing banks. Melvin Purvis and the FBI led by J. Edgar Hoover leads the first cross state man hunt for Dillinger and him crew.

Michael Mann hit’s another one out of the park with Public Enemies. It amazes me how well he can craft such powerful scenes. Depp never ceases to amaze, he is one of the greatest actors of our time and I hope to see him in many more films. The rest of the cast were good too, but there were no real standout performances.  The best scenes in the film where Dillinger and Homer discussing their next moves and who they should work with. Depp and Stephen Dorff seem to work well together. Top marks to whoever got the wardrobes together, the cars and the props, because some of that stuff had to be real hard to find. Put those together with the sets and you have the 30s coming alive again. If there is one flaw in the film, it would be its length. I am all for long movies, they really make you feel like you’re getting your moneys worth, but that only applies to a film that can carry itself. This one could have dealt with a thirty minute or so cut. Some parts just seemed to drag along, but you shouldn’t miss this one.

Transformers Revenge of the Fallen

The Review:

This is the Movie in a Minute review for Transformers Revenge of the Fallen. Directed by Michael Bay and staring Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, John Turturro, Peter Cullen, Frank Welker, Jess Harnell, Hugo Weaving, Tony Todd and Charlie Adler.

Revenge of the Fallen gives the back story of the Deceptions. It also shows the hostilities between the US government and the Autobots. Along with college bound Sam struggling to keep his relationship with Mikaela intact.

Spoilers Ahead

When I first set out to review movies, I said that I wanted to do this with an unbiased opinion, based on previous content including books, remakes, true story, etc. That being said, this movie was terrible. I didn’t go to see a Transformers movie to watch two dogs have sex, which was shown over and over again. That was what the comedy in this film was like, the same thing over again. Case in point, Wheelie humping Mikaela’s leg, still with that, I don’t know how they did it, but they managed to make Wheelie even more annoying than he was in the G1 series. The slow-mo scenes were overused, that’s where half the movie was, taking scenes that should last no more than a few seconds and turning them into minute long affairs. I guess Prime grew up, because he is the same size as Megatron in this one, while he was quite a bit shorter in the first film. His fighting skills have also improved, dramatically. He couldn’t even hold his own against Megatron in the first movie, but here he takes on Megatron, Starscream and another nameless Deception all at once. This also seemed to give him a confidence boost as he was very arrogant. I didn’t really care when Prime died either, he was just so full of himself it didn’t matter, but of course, they had to bring him back. I just have one question; I thought merging meant that the two objects become one, the how did “The Fallen” pull the Matrix out of Prime’s spark, after Sam merged them together? I would think that Prime would just die again. Also what they did to Jetfire was just wrong, making him old like that is wrong on so many levels. Then what Soundwave is doing to that satellite should not have been seen by kids, and on top of that, they had Frank Welker doing his Dr. Claw voice. Coming to Arcee, which one of those motorcycles was Arcee? Was it one of them, or all of them? I’m not even going to get into Skids and Mudflap, but I will say this, they are the worst comic relief I’ve ever seen.  The entire film is just boring, repetitive, drawn out, dumb and not worth the price of admission.
